SharePoint's multi-purpose platform allows for managing and provisioning of intranet portals, extranets and websites, document management and file management, collaboration spaces, social networking tools, enterprise search, business intelligence tooling, process/information integration, and third-party developed solutions. SharePoint can also be used as a web application development platform.
Google Sites and SharePoint are both business solutions used to create collaborative websites (basically for intranet, but sometimes used for public websites too). They provide customizable templates for quick web page creation, enable integration with their respective ecosystems (Google Workspace and Microsoft 365).
But Google Sites (launched in 2008) is a cloud-service that primarily targets small businesses or teams that need a simple intranet or project pages. It has no advanced workflow or automation tools compared to SharePoint. It's integration beyond Google Workspace tools is rather limited. But on the other hand - it requires minimal learning curve because it's drag-and-drop interface is very simple.
SharePoint (2001) is designed for medium and large enterprises and provides robust document management and collaboration features like workflows, version control and custom development capabilities. It can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud and supports third-party app and service integration.
