mailcow
Mailcow is a Docker based email server which provides an elegant web interface for managing domains, mailboxes and more. Mailcow makes the provisioning and managing of complex email applications easy.

Zimbra and mailcow are both open-source email servers, that support multiple email protocols (IMAP, POP3, SMTP) and include common features like calendar, contacts and task management. They provide web-interface and target small to medium-sized business and enterprise segment.

But Zimbra (available since 2005) offers both open-source and commercial editions with advanced features. It's more suited for larger enterprise and institutions with complex needs. Zimbra provides more advanced collaboration tools such as document sharing and team chat. Now it's backed by a large company Synacor, so (for paid version) you'll get additional support and development.

mailcow (2014) is German open-source-only product with a strong focus on community-driven development. It's better suited for small and medium business. mailcow uses Docker containers for simplified deployment and management provides more modular approach for easy customization and expansion.
