Mailcow is a Docker based email server which provides an elegant web interface for managing domains, mailboxes and more. Mailcow makes the provisioning and managing of complex email applications easy.

iRedMail and mailcow are both self-hosted email servers that support multiple email protocols (IMAP, SMTP, POP3), provide anti-spam and anti-virus features and have web-interface for administrators. They use open-source components like Postfix and Dovecot.

But iRedMail (available since 2007) is Chinese software. It's simpler to setup which is important for small and medium businesses. It's better suited for users wanting a traditional server installation without virtualization because it doesn't provides containerization by default.

mailcow (2013) is Germany-based email server, fully containerized and using Docker for modularity and ease deployment. It includes integrated DNS and domain management and can be used in larger companies with advanced requirements.
