Important news about Team Messaging platforms

2025. Microsoft to cut Teams from Office 365 to avoid EU sanctions

Microsoft has decided to spin off the corporate messenger Teams from the Office 365 suite to avoid an EU fine of 10% of its global annual turnover. In addition, prices for Teams plans without video conferencing will be reduced and compatibility with competing software will be improved. The antitrust investigation against Microsoft began after a complaint from Teams competitor Slack in July 2020. The European Commission then pointed out that the integration of Microsoft's IT platforms creates an unfair advantage over other market players. In 2024, the European Commission accused Microsoft of violating antitrust laws due to the fact that the IT company sold the Teams messenger in Office 365 and Microsoft 365 packages for several years.

2025. Slack adds AI to search, transcripts and chat summary

Enterprise messaging app Slack has expanded its search capabilities with AI features, including voice message transcripts and chat summaries, as well as short AI summaries of channels and discussions. Using AI, Slack now lets you search across chat channels, as well as connected apps (like Google Drive, Salesforce and Microsoft Teams). Huddles (voice and video chat features) also includes call transcripts and summaries. The AI automatically highlights key phrases in conversations. You can also get a short summary of another user’s profile, showing their role and recent work. Or get a summary of all the messages in which you are mentioned.

2023. Microsoft’s AI-powered Designer tool comes to Teams

Microsoft is introducing its AI-driven art creation tool, Designer, to the free version of Teams. Users of Microsoft Teams can now utilize Designer, an app similar to Canva, to generate various designs for presentations, posters, digital postcards, and other purposes. These designs can be shared on social media platforms and other channels. Designer can generate designs based on text prompts or uploaded images by leveraging DALL-E 2, OpenAI's text-to-image AI. The tool offers options for customization and personalization through drop-down menus and text boxes. Designer is accessible through the web, Microsoft's Edge browser via the sidebar, and now within the free version of Teams. The announcement of Designer was initially made in October, and new features such as caption generation and animated visuals were added in April. Microsoft has also promised additional advanced editing features in the future.
